Presentation "Development of the "Next Generation" of Structural and Functional Materials for Advanced Applications" by Dr. Francisco Carlos Robles Hernandez, PhD, faculty candidate in Mechanical Engineering Technology. The presentation will be divided in two major sections: i) Research experience and ii) Research Plans at University of Houston . In following a brief description of each topic is given:
Electromagnetic Stirring with and without Vibration : My research work on this field is the only successfully applied method in the liquid state to refine the microstructure and phases (e.g. silicon) for Al-Si eutectic and hypereutectic alloys. Along the presentations will be discussed the advantages of using electromagnetic methods over chemical modification and the potential of these methods to produce composites. Thermal analysis is one of the most reliable on-line methods to monitor castings and I will present novel research findings of this method.
Nanostructured Composite Materials: Production of nanostructured composites with dispersed nanoreinforcements (C 60 -C 70 -C Soot ) by mechanical alloying are possible by using spark plasma sintering. The use of different metal matrix show completely different behavior and potential for diverse applications. Aluminum matrix have demonstrated to be very reactive with C 60 and C 70 and C soot , while iron catalyze the formation of C 60 making this two step method a much more efficient way to produce fullerene. The synthesized fullerene can be transformed to diamond by thermomechanical process or can be separated by chemical/electrochemical means. This method will be explored to produce nanotubes (SWNT and MWNT), encapsulate compounds (drugs, pollutants, biohazards, waste, radioactive materials, etc.) among other uses.
Sonochemical synthesis : Using sonochemical methods it is possible to synthesize nanocrystals (e.g. anatase) with large surface area that is optimum for catalysis. The main parameters to control in sonochemical synthesis are: intensity, time, temperature that will be use to design a sonochemical workstation for oxides and pure noble metals. In my future research I have planned the use sonochemical products for catalysis, electronics, composites, tribology, etc.
Steels and structural materials: In my current research I have been involved in the development of steels for rails and wheels for railroad applications. Along this research work I have been studied a number of conventional and non conventional mechanical testing. The current status of my projects includes the development of 4 steels for wheel applications. A novel methodology using thermal analysis and a modified Jominy test sample. Thermal analysis have demonstrated to be a successfully method to determine phases present in steel microstructure as well as transformation temperatures. Rail base corrosion for transit systems is a major concern and during my research career I proposed a unique method to reduce this occurrence.
