Q. How does the travel assistance work?
A.
We realize that there may be relocation costs involved in your participating in this program.
We have allocated $300 per student to cover your moving to and returning at the completion of the 10 weeks.
Our process of claiming reimbursement will be by your completing a travel expense report and indicating
the mileage or airfare receipts.
The two students selected to present at regional or NSF funded education programs will receive
additional money to travel to the conference.
Q. Will I be insured while participating in this program?
A.
Insurance is only provided for UH students whose tuition covers mandatory insurance fee.
Unless participants in this program register and take summer class for credits, the insurance policy does not apply.
A participant should have his/her own insurance.
Q. What may I expect and how do I prepare for the program?
A.
The program details are located on this web site, and will be available upon your arrival.
Being involved in a research-intensive program, you are expected to assist a faculty member or graduate student
while having research experience. Field trips to high-tech companies and research institutions in the Houston
area will be arranged, and weekly group activities and student professional development are expected.
You will help to shape the program by filling out pre and post program surveys.
Q. What are the program outcomes?
A.
At the end of the program, you will prepare and present your study in poster or paper format.
Two participants may be selected to present at a regional technical conference or at the NSF-sponsored educational conference.
We anticipate that participants will gain research experience and continue to work in a research and development
field in industry or at graduate schools of their choice.
Q. How do I receive the scholarship? What does it cover?
A.
You will receive the total of $4,000 for the 10-week program. Direct deposit to your bank account can be arranged.
Payment will be available after the 2nd, 5th, and 9th week. In addition, should you stay in the UH student dorms,
your housing of $1,250 will be paid for you, and you may participate in the daily meal plan worth $20.00 per day,
this too will be covered should you select it.
Q. How is the accommodation arranged?
A.
Participants can choose to stay at a UH dormitory to be covered by the program, or off-campus private housing at your own cost.
Q. How do I get around town and campus?
A.
The City of Houston has a popular METRO system, with connections and stops around the UH campus. More details at
www.ridemetro.org.
Q. Can I use other facilities at UH?
A.
Yes, you may access different libraries or use the nice and modern Student Recreation Center.
Check out the sport facilities at www.uh.edu/recreation/.
Q. Does UH provide support to students with special needs?
A.
Our UH Center for Students with Disabilities (www.uh.edu/csd/)
provides special support for registered students.
Assuming participants in this program are not registered UH students, the Center for Students with Disabilities
could advise and loan us special equipment if it is available.
Q. How is the weather in Houston during summer?
A.
You can expect 90-96°F and humid weather.
