Our Research Labs
The labs presented in this section focus primarily on research and usually are funded
through government or company grants. These labs usually have one or more faculty members
who are responsible for the lab activities.
If you would like further information about the activities or opportunities associated with a

Intelligent Sensor Grid and Informatics
Directed by Dr. Xiaojing (Jane) Yuan, this lab covers numerous topics related to intelligent sensor
grids and biomedical informatics.

Wireless and Optical Networking Lab
Recently changing its name from the Optical Networking Research Laboratory (ONRL), the Wireless and Optical Networking
Lan (WON) is supported by several industry partners, including AT&T, Spring, Bitrage and Fujitsu. It has set up
state of the art networking platforms within the College of Technology buildings and other buildings on campus.
This laboratory is directed by Dr. Driss Benhaddou and Dr. Deniz Gurkan.

Power Electronics Research Laboratory
This lab, directed by Dr. W. Shireen, supports graduate research work in
Power Electronics that includes:
advanced power converters, adjustable speed motor drives and power quality issues.
The laboratory is equipped with test stations which
include power converter modules along with associated instrumentation for
experimental evaluation. State of the art Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based
controllers and associated software are used to control the power converters.

AT&T Labs
The UH ATT Technology Lab (also known as the UH ATT Lab) was the result of more than
two years of collaboration between the University of Houston and Southwestern Bell
Communications, Inc (now ATT) in the areas of telecommunications, networks, and education.
The purpose of the Lab is to serve as a hub for the international educational and research
community and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information.
To achieve its goals, the Lab has been equipped with state-of-the-art networking and
communications equipment which include a campus-wide three-node SONET/MPLS and gigaethernet
testbed that connects to four other UH research labs, wireless internet, and
high-definition videoconferencing and videostreaming.

Remote Optical Research Knowledge
The ROCK project is an NSF funded project that aims to create remotely-controlled optical
circuits laboratory experiments. It is expected to help introduce a hands-on laboratory
for distance education. A group of faculty from three universities is joining effort
to develop this challenging research project (Dr. Driss Benhaddou (University of Houston - UH),
Dr. Deniz Gurkan (UH), Dr. Alan Mickelson (Colorado University Boulder - CU),
Dr. Frank Barnes (CU), Dr. Zhonqi Pan (University of Louisiana Lafayette).
Recently Dr. Phyllis R. Nelson, Dr. Ertan Salik, R. Frank Smith from CalPoly Pomona
have joined the efforts to this project.
