Academic Notice
If you are a freshman who has earned less than 2.0 semester GPA (below a C Average) in your first semester of enrollment at UH and if you have earned less than 29 semester hours of total credit, you will be placed on Academic Notice.
This is not probation, and you CANNOT be suspended at this time.
This applies only to your first semester. If you do not earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 during your second semester, you will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic notice must go to both the Undergraduate Scholars and to the College of Technology for advising.
Academic Probation
If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 (and you are not a first-semester freshman with 29 hours or less) during your academic career, you will be placed on academic probation. This is a warning to get your act together!
While your cumulative GPA is below 2.0, you will remain on probation and you must continue to earn a semester GPA of 2.0 to avoid being placed on academic suspension.
Academic Suspension
Once you have been placed on academic probation, meaning your overall cumulative GPA has fallen below 2.0, if your semester GPA falls below a 2.0, you will then be placed on academic suspension.
While you are on suspension at UH, you cannot enroll in classes here.
- For the first suspension, you must sit out one semester before applying for readmission.
- For a second suspension, you must sit out 1 full year (12 months) before applying for readmission.
- For a third suspension, you will not be readmitted to UH.
What to do while on academic suspension
- Decide on a strategy to avoid suspension in the future.
- Take classes at a community college or other University.
- Work on study and time management skills.
Applying for readmission from suspension
- Readmission from suspension is neither automatic nor guaranteed. The College of Technology's Readmission Committee meets each semester to review applications for readmission. Follow the guidelines below to ensure that your application for readmission demonstrates your readiness to resume your studies at the University of Houston. If you have not yet declared a major, make an appointment with an advisor in the Undergraduate Scholars Division regarding readmission.
- Get an application for readmission available from the Academic Services Center, Room 108 T1.
- Complete the application and turn in all requested materials. It is your responsibility as a student to attach ALL required documentation to the Readmission Application package. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Your complete application will be forwarded to the Readmission Review Committee.
- The Committee likes to see that a student is well prepared to return to school. Therefore, don't use the small amount of space on page 2 of the application to describe your personal circumstances and indicate your readiness to return. Write "See Attached" on the application. Then prepare and submit a typed personal statement to include with your readmission application. The statement should answer the following questions:
- What factors contributed to your poor academic performance?
- How have these factors been resolved? In what ways are you more prepared to be successful in school at this time?
- What activities have you engaged in since your suspension that relate to your preparation and readiness to return?
- Turn the packet in by the deadline. DO NOT BE LATE, NO EXCUSES. The readmission committee strictly enforces deadlines.
- Deadlines for readmission packets are:
- Fall Semester - July 1
- Spring Semester - December 1
- Summer Semester - May 1
- The Academic Services Center will mail a letter to you regarding the outcome of the review process. Please do not call for information. We cannot provide information or updates on the review committee’s decision over the phone.
