The minimum requirements for unconditional admission status are a grade point average of 3.00 (A = 4.00) for the most recent 60 hours of undergraduate/graduate coursework and satisfactory test scores as determined by the college or department. Foreign degrees will be evaluated in their entirety.
Conditional admission in the College of Technology may be granted to students who have achieved grade point averages of at least 2.75 (A=4.00) and whose score on the appropriate admissions exam meet levels that would indicate probable success in a graduate program.
In order to remain in a graduate studies program subsequent to admission, conditionally admitted students must earn grade point averages of at least 3.00 (A = 4.00) in the first twelve hours of graduate work attempted at the University of Houston, and fulfill any specific stipulations of the college or department (such as prerequisite courses, etc.)
Once conditional requirements are met, a student is evaluated for unconditional admission into the college.
Credit may be transferred only for advanced-level courses and graduate courses completed with a grade of A or B. These courses must have been taken prior to acceptance into a graduate program in the College of Technology. The number of transfer credits applied to the graduate degree is subject to the approval of the student’s faculty advisor and department; however, not more than nine semester hours of transfer credit may be applied toward a master’s degree. There is a time limitation; transfer credit must be evaluated immediately following acceptance into a graduate program.
Approval to audit or visit a course is granted to qualified UH students by the instructor and the dean of the college in which the course is offered. Such approval conveys only the privilege of observing and does not include submitting papers, taking tests, or participating in class discussions, laboratories or field work.
A student may audit a class only when space is available and must wait to submit the audit application for approval until after the first meeting (official third class day for the university). However, an instructor or dean may refuse any request to audit a course. Please note that other conditions and restrictions may apply.
Credit is not given for an audited course, nor may a change to credit status be made after students have registered. Only licensed law practitioners may audit law courses. Students may obtain additional information and audit application forms from the Academic Services Center, room 108-T1.
A graduate student may not earn any more than 9 semester hours with grades of C+ or lower. Students who earn more than 9 semester hours of C+ or lower become ineligible for any advanced degree at this institution and will not be permitted to re-enroll for graduate study. The four-C rule affects any course taken at the University of Houston toward a graduate degree program, whether or not those courses are repeated.
A minimum grade point average of 3.00 (B) for all graduate courses attempted is required for a graduate degree; failure to maintain this average may result in either a warning, probation, or suspension.
Students must maintain a satisfactory rate of progress toward the degree throughout his/her enrollment. A department may terminate enrollment at any time if the rate of progress is not satisfactory. Students will be notified in writing of the termination by the Chair of the department of the major. Copies of this letter will be filed with the dean of the student's college
